Behind the tiled roof and chimney of a former bathhouse, a contemporary art gallery
This gallery began as "Kashiwa-yu," a public bathhouse founded in 1787; the current building went up in 1951 and was converted into a gallery in 1993. The temple-like tiled roof and chimney, the turquoise tiled base, and the noren-curtained entrance still look the way they did as a bathhouse — but step through the curtain and you're in a white-cube space showing contemporary art. It's open Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00–18:00, free admission, no reservation needed (closed Sundays, Mondays, and holidays).
